Lego® NinjaGo® movie night

The 3 of us went for a night show of the new Lego® animation movie ‘NinjaGo®’ on Sunday night @ Cheras Sentral. Adrian ranked it the best of the lot (The Lego Movie and Batman movie). Can’t say the same for both of us though.  Somehow, we had the feeling of ‘you watched one, you’ve watched them all’ feel. We almost dozed off.

Halfway through the movie, with the fast-moving and constant repeat of some used comic scenes, the movie felt sluggish and at times, doesn’t feel funny at all. Not sure we’re getting old for these or if Lego/Warner Bros seemed to overuse such technique. The Lego® characters and everything around it move so fast that it literally hurt my eyes.

I was never the fan of the NinjaGo® series, to begin with, although Adrian does have a few sets with him. The animated series that we used to watch is somewhat different from this and the movie plot is pretty predictable and draggy. The multi-characters are there only to support the main one and you don’t feel you want to know more about them after you were introduced to their name and individual powers. That’s how ‘lonely’ this feels.

The baddie, Lord Garmadon, as usual in any Lego movies, is sardonic and playful at the same time. He doesn’t do much damage besides destroying the city again and again and they made him look soft here. I do like his appearance though.

Like all other Lego® movies, it does have those nifty automobiles and unique troops from both sides. Once I’ve seen all the vehicles and robots on display, that’s where I lost interest. There’s nothing much to anticipate. This is a big daddy and son movie. Adrian said he went teary-eyed after a certain scene at the end. Well, time to re-evaluate your father eh…?

For those who like Lego® and NinjaGo® or just chill out in a cinema, this is probably a good one. The kids will love it as it is colourful and cause it is Lego®. Hah.

Watch out for Jackie Chan too!
